Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy. The practice of Reiki is a gentle energy healing modality based on the early twentieth century teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan. The practitioner's hands are placed lightly on the client. As the energy begins to flow, there may be a sensation of heat, tingling or comfort and relaxation. As the healing energy is brought to the client, it can augment the body's innate ability to heal itself.
People use Reiki for stress relief, relaxation, overall improvement of well-being and health. Reiki is also used for treatment of chronic pain and anxiety as well as for symptom relief of the side effects of cancer treatments. Reiki is increasingly being used in hospitals as it is found to compliment conventional medical treatments. It is also being used in hospice care due to its ability to alleviate pain and ease a person's transition in a peaceful state.
